dmXLAN v4¶
dmXLAN is ELC’s control and configuration software for dmXLAN Nodes and Switches. It helps you set up, monitor, test, and troubleshoot a lighting network from one place, whether you’re commissioning an installation, prepping a show, or tracking down an intermittent issue.
What dmXLAN is for¶
dmXLAN is typically used in three moments of a project:
Commissioning and configuration¶
- Discover ELC dmXLAN devices on the network and configure nodes and switches
- Prepare configuration offline (without being connected to dmXLAN hardware) so you can build and validate files ahead of load-in
Fixture control and testing (with or without a console)¶
- Control and test fixtures connected to the dmXLAN network without needing an external lighting desk
- Works independently of fixture/console brand, useful for focusing, line-checks, patch validation, and quick isolation (“fixture vs. network”)
Monitoring and diagnostics¶
- Monitor the whole lighting system: DMX universes, RDM devices, network equipment, and even third-party controllers/converters
- Use logging to capture data, DMX values, and connection status for troubleshooting and handover documentation
Core functionality¶
System control¶
dmXLAN can control, configure, and test fixtures on the network without relying on an external console, regardless of fixture/console manufacturer.
Plan View (2D layout)¶
Organize your rig as a logical 2D plan, visualize connections, and monitor fixture parameters directly in that view.
RDM tools¶
- Discover connected RDM devices
- Change RDM properties
- Create RDM profiles
Network and universe monitoring¶
Get a clear overview of DMX universes, RDM devices, and network equipment for a single “system status” view.
Logging¶
Record system activity, values, and connectivity so you can diagnose issues, prove stability, or share evidence with others.
Offline preparation¶
Build and edit dmXLAN show/install files without needing to be connected to live dmXLAN devices.
Mobile workflow add-ons¶
dmXLAN v4 integrates with mobile apps that extend work onto the floor:
dmXLAN QR (iOS / Android)¶
Set DMX addresses and modes over RDM by scanning RDM-QR codes—fast for large rigs and refits.
Fixture Tester (iOS / iPadOS)¶
Supports fixture testing, RDM control, and dmXLAN node configuration from iOS/iPadOS, and can synchronize a dmXLAN file so you’re not tied to a laptop during focus/commissioning.
Common use cases¶
Touring and events¶
- Prebuild the project file offline, then verify everything on site
- Walk the rig with Fixture Tester to validate addressing, modes, and response
- Log intermittent issues during rehearsals to correlate “when it happened” with device/network state
Architectural and permanent installs¶
- Commission nodes/switches and document the installation with logs
- Keep a baseline configuration file and export logs during service visits
- Monitor universes, devices, and network equipment over time
Service and troubleshooting¶
- Isolate whether a fault is upstream (source), network, node port, or fixture
- Use RDM discovery and property control to confirm device identity and settings
- Capture logs to share with support or integrators
